Recently I blogged in German on a new publication of organ music by women composers and while I wasn’t too happy with the edition, it still inspired me to write a short blog post on English organist, pianist, teacher and composer Ann Mounsey Bartholomew (1811-1891).

She wrote numerous songs and hymns and wrote music for lyrics by her husband William Bartholomew, or he wrote lyrics to her music and together with her sister Elisabeth she published „Sacred Harmony“, a collection of hymn settings, preludes and interludes.

In short, a versatile and hard-working artist. And one that’s still not played very often.

There are several rather short pieces for the organ in „The Village Organist“, most of which can be played on smaller organs, too.

A slightly better known opus is the „Introduction & Fugue“, edited and published by Barbara Harbach (and others). This piece, in a manuals-only version, can also be found in volume 6 of „The Organist’s Quarterly Journal“ on pages 57-59 – but the introduction sounds a lot better when pedals are added. Thomas Allery plays the „Introduction & Fugue“ right at the beginning of an online recital (that’s worth listening to as a whole).

In the above mentioned collection of organ music, the introduction without the fugue has been published.

(click here for the English version) Auch wenn ich am neuen Sammelband mit Orgelmusik von Komponistinnen nicht viele gute Haare gelassen habe, wurde ich doch inspiriert, kurz über die Organistin, Pianistin, Pädagogin und Komponistin Ann Mounsey Bartholomew (1811-1891) zu bloggen.
