Ohne Ethel Smyth (1858-1944) w\u00e4re die (Musik-)Welt ein gutes St\u00fcck \u00e4rmer – Ethel Smyth war noch viel mehr als \u201enur\u201c Komponistin, und viele d\u00fcrften sie mit der Suffragettenbewegung verbinden, doch hier soll es um ihre Orgelmusik gehen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das erste Orgelwerk, das ich von Ethel in die Finger bekam, ist das Pr\u00e4ludium und die Fuge \u00fcber den Choral \u201eO Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid\u201c im Sammelband<\/a> \u201eFrauen komponieren\u201c. Keine \u201eleichte Kost\u201c, kein Blattspielmaterial, aber sehr, sehr lohnend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bei Novello sind Ethels \u201eShort Choral Preludes\u201c aus dem Jahr 1884 in zwei B\u00e4nden erschienen. Vor allem der Kanon \u00fcber \u201eO Gott du frommer Gott\u201c eignet sich auch f\u00fcr kleinere Orgeln, sofern das Pedal eigenst\u00e4ndig registriert werden kann (wobei das St\u00fcck auch auf Instrumenten mit angeh\u00e4ngtem Pedal spielbar ist).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sehr sch\u00f6n und nicht allzu schwer ist au\u00dferdem das \u201ePrelude on a traditional Irish Air\u201c, das u.a. bei Certosa<\/a> erh\u00e4ltlich ist. Hier<\/a> ein Konzertmitschnitt, wo ich es auf einer zweimanualigen Orgel spiele, und hier<\/a> eine Version auf einmanualiger Orgel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without Ethel Smyth (1858-1944), the (music) world would be poorer \u2013 Ethel Smyth was so much more than \u201ejust\u201c a composer, and many probably think about the suffragette movement when thinking about her, but I want to concentrate on her organ music in this blog post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first organ piece by Ethel that I laid my hands on is the prelude and fugue on O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid\u201c (\u201eO sorrow deep\u201c). It\u2019s part of the collection \u201eFrauen komponieren\u201c („Women compose“) by Schott and it\u2019s definitely not easy, and not sight-reading material, but absolutely worth studying and playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethel\u2019s \u201eShort Choral Preludes\u201c from 1884 have been published by Novello in two volumes. The canon on \u201eO Gott du frommer Gott\u201c (\u201eO God thou faithful God\u201c) is suitable for small organs, if the pedal stops are independent, bur it also works on organs with permanently coupled pedalboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very nice and not too difficult is the \u201ePrelude on a traditional Irish Air\u201c, published by Certosa<\/a> i.a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
