Ohne Ethel Smyth (1858-1944) wäre die (Musik-)Welt ein gutes Stück ärmer – Ethel Smyth war noch viel mehr als „nur“ Komponistin, und viele dürften sie mit der Suffragettenbewegung verbinden, doch hier soll es um ihre Orgelmusik gehen.
Das erste Orgelwerk, das ich von Ethel in die Finger bekam, ist das Präludium und die Fuge über den Choral „O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid“ im Sammelband „Frauen komponieren“. Keine „leichte Kost“, kein Blattspielmaterial, aber sehr, sehr lohnend.
Bei Novello sind Ethels „Short Choral Preludes“ aus dem Jahr 1884 in zwei Bänden erschienen. Vor allem der Kanon über „O Gott du frommer Gott“ eignet sich auch für kleinere Orgeln, sofern das Pedal eigenständig registriert werden kann (wobei das Stück auch auf Instrumenten mit angehängtem Pedal spielbar ist).
Sehr schön und nicht allzu schwer ist außerdem das „Prelude on a traditional Irish Air“, das u.a. bei Certosa erhältlich ist. Hier ein Konzertmitschnitt, wo ich es auf einer zweimanualigen Orgel spiele, und hier eine Version auf einmanualiger Orgel.

Without Ethel Smyth (1858-1944), the (music) world would be poorer – Ethel Smyth was so much more than „just“ a composer, and many probably think about the suffragette movement when thinking about her, but I want to concentrate on her organ music in this blog post.
The first organ piece by Ethel that I laid my hands on is the prelude and fugue on O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid“ („O sorrow deep“). It’s part of the collection „Frauen komponieren“ („Women compose“) by Schott and it’s definitely not easy, and not sight-reading material, but absolutely worth studying and playing.
Ethel’s „Short Choral Preludes“ from 1884 have been published by Novello in two volumes. The canon on „O Gott du frommer Gott“ („O God thou faithful God“) is suitable for small organs, if the pedal stops are independent, bur it also works on organs with permanently coupled pedalboard.
Very nice and not too difficult is the „Prelude on a traditional Irish Air“, published by Certosa i.a.
